6 Proven Methods to Get More Traffic to Your Website

Everyone with a website is looking for ways to get more traffic. This is the most fundamental need of any blogger or website owner. Whether you are looking for customers, subscribers or simply people to read your blogs, without traffic your site is invisible.

There are many ways to generate traffic. Since the internet is constantly evolving, you should keep up with the latest methods. Some tactics, especially when it comes to SEO, no longer work as well as they once did (or may even do you more harm than good). In this article, I’ll be discussing some traffic building techniques that are effective today. Most of the methods are free, though I will also briefly discuss paid traffic since it’s usually the fastest way to start getting traffic.

Get more traffic

  1. Paid Traffic

Advertising is the fastest way to get traffic because it doesn’t require you to create articles or videos or do any type of SEO.

There are many choices if you want to advertise your website.

    • Pay-per-click

Pay-per-click (PPC) is one of the most popular options. Google’s AdWords program allows you to bid on keywords and pay for each click.

    • Cost-per-action

There are also many other advertising models, such as cost-per-action (or cost-per-engagement) ads, where visitors must perform some type of action such as filling out a form, playing a game or filling out a survey.

    • Banner or text ads

You can also purchase banner or text ads and have them displayed on popular websites in your niche. This can be arranged through ad networks, or you can contact website owners directly and inquire about pricing. Some website owners who don’t currently have ads can be good candidates. They may have never thought of monetizing their sites with ads and may offer you a reasonable deal.

Paid advertising can be effective for generating traffic, but it can also be risky. You should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose, as it often takes some time before you come up with a profitable advertising strategy. If your budget is limited, you should start off by focusing on free methods for generating traffic.

  2. Write or Create Quality Content

This is the most basic way to get good quality traffic, but it’s also one of the most effective in the long run. If you want your blog or website to be popular, you need to update it regularly. Whether you write your own posts, make videos or outsource your content creation, you need to give visitors a good reason to visit your site.

After you’ve posted something to your site, don’t stop there. You should share it on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or any other sites on which you’re active. You should also bookmark your posts on sites such as Reddit, Digg, StumbleUpon or any others that you use.

  3. Blog Commenting and Guest Blogging

You can also benefit from traffic that is coming to other blogs if you do it correctly. Blog commenting is one of the simplest ways to leverage traffic from blogs in your niche. You should choose blogs that are fairly popular, or at least active. If the blog hasn’t been updated in a year, chances are it isn’t receiving much traffic.

You can find blogs by doing a search under Google Blogs. You should choose sites that are closely related to your own site’s topic. When you find such a site, look for any discussions to which you can contribute. You must add meaningful comments, not just one-liners (which will get deleted as spam).

    • Blog commenting

Blog commenting can work really well, especially when you find blogs that you can comment on regularly. Get involved in ongoing discussions so that people start to recognize you. Then they will be curious enough to click on your link and visit your site.

    • Guest blogging

Guest blogging is another tactic that can get you even more traffic than blog commenting. In this case, you contact the blog owner and ask if he or she accepts guest posts. You must be able to contribute an original article to the site that would be of interest to readers. At the end, of course, will be your name and URL. If the blog is popular, you can get a good amount of traffic this way, as well as backlinks.

  4. Create Videos

Video marketing has become a powerful source of traffic. It’s often easier to rank videos with the search engines than articles. People are also more likely to share videos than written content.

There are many options for creating videos. You can simply talk into your webcam if you’re comfortable doing this. You can also create PowerPoint type videos, or use a tool such as Animoto (which has both free and paid options). There are also services that allow you to create animated videos.

If you are serious about creating high quality videos, you should get some kind of video editing software. There are many good programs available, some for free.

If you don’t want to bother creating your own videos, you can outsource this. You can pay people to create the same type of videos you can make yourself. You can get short videos made by people on Freelancer.com usually for a reasonable price.

Once you have a video, you can upload it to your own site, as well as video sharing sites like YouTube, Vimeo and many others. You should also share your videos on social media sites, especially Facebook. Remember to fill out the description fields and insert keywords, as this helps your videos rank with the search engines.

  5. Forums

Forums are another good source of traffic. No matter what topic your website is about, chances are there are some popular forums in that niche. Forum marketing is not an instant source of traffic, but a long term one.

Once you join a forum, you will have to devote some time to making yourself known. Post helpful and interesting comments. Start a few threads of your own. Then you can generate traffic by having your website URL in your forum signature.

When working on forums, make sure to read and follow the rules. For example, most forums don’t take kindly to people advertising their websites in posts. There are some marketing forums that allow you to advertise in certain sections, but in most cases you can only promote yourself in your signature. You don’t want to get banned from the forum, so follow the rules!

  6. Email Marketing

Email marketing is one of the best ways to develop loyal customers and more steady traffic to your site. The way this works is that you build up a list of subscribers whom you can email whenever you want. You can then tell them about your offers, or just invite them to visit your site to read your latest post or watch your latest video.

To get people to join your mailing list, you need to have an opt-in form on your website. These can also be placed on your Facebook page. To motivate people to sign up to your list, you can offer them a free gift of some type. This can be an e-book you wrote or one that you’ve purchased the rights to.

To set up your email list, you will want to use an email marketing service or autoresponder such as Aweber or MailChimp. These and other such companies offer a variety of services that help you set up and manage an email list. You can, among other things, schedule and automate the sending out of emails using one of these autoresponders.

Email marketing takes a good deal of effort. It really isn’t that hard to set up an automated system once you figure out how your autoresponder works. However, you must take the time to stay in touch with your subscribers. You have to provide them with some interesting and helpful content in your emails. If you only try to sell them products, they will likely unsubscribe!

Steadily increase traffic to your website

Building traffic usually takes time. Unless you can afford to use paid advertising, you have to think of it as a long term process. The more content you place on your site (that you share as widely as possible), the more visitors you will attract!

If you want to have a steady source of traffic, I recommend doing email marketing as well. This is another method that takes time before you start seeing impressive results, but it is definitely worthwhile. There are many ways to generate more traffic, and we’ve only covered a few of them here.

Some other methods include article marketing, podcasts and webinars, to name just a few.

It’s best to pick a couple of methods that appeal to you and focus on those until you start seeing results. If you try out too many methods at once, you may get overwhelmed and lose focus. Always remember, however, that publishing great content is the foundation of your site’s success!
