HostGator has come a long way from its humble beginnings in Brent Oxley’s dorm room in Florida in 2002. The company, based in Houston, Texas, began with three simple servers and has since then grown into a company with a quarter of a million customer base in over 200 countries. We will now review the progress the web hosting company has made in just under 365 days, in 2010.
Record Breaking Growth
In January 2006, HostGator first made headlines by announcing that the company had successfully hosted over 200,000 domains. Fast forward two years later and HostGator is being ranked as one of the Fastest Growing Companies in America by INC 500.
That same year, HostGator also ranked Number One under the Top 50 Businesses in Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas. HostGator was also ranked Number Two under the category of Top 100 Business Services Companies of 2008.
At the start of 2009, HostGator recorded 2.9 Million domains hosted under the company and by the time 2010 came around, the company had already achieved another milestone by recording over 4.9 million domains being hosted under the company – meaning that the company grew by over two million domains in one year! By the end of May 2011, HostGator hosts over 5 million+ domain names!
Opening of New HostGator Office in Austin, Texas
HostGator has finally launched its second office at 8100 Cameron Road, Austin, Texas in July 2010. The Texas office spans 40,000 square feet and hosts an initial setup of 200 employees, although there are plans to grow the number of employees to a minimum of 300 people over the next three years.
They have over 500 employees now, and they are still growing every day! This effectively means that response time will be quicker for us, their valued customers.
HostGator Sponsors a NASCAR Team
The deal between HostGator and #87 Joe Nemechek in NASCAR meant that the HostGator logo would be visible in one NASCAR Sprint Cup race and four Nationwide races. The Chevrolet sporting the new HostGator logo was first featured in the Coca Cola 400 Nationwide race on July 3rd, 2010 at the Daytona Motor Speedway.
HostGator Billboards Coming to a City Near You!
HostGator might have initially grown due to its glowing reputation via word of mouth. However, according to HostGator’s blog, the company now spends at least USD30,000 per month on Google Adwords, over USD350,000 per month on affiliate commissions and over USD100,000 per year on random advertising. Remember Billy the Human Billboard who had HostGator tattooed across his neck?
Random human inking aside, in 2010, the company also signed a deal for not one, but ten billboards advertising HostGator services on some of Houston’s busiest freeways.
If you haven’t been spotting Snappy on a billboard on your way to work, you might have also heard of the company on your drive home as HostGator also bought some air time on the High-Tech Texan Show hosted by Michael Garfield.
HostGator Sponsors the UFC Fighters
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fans will be interested to know that UFC number 105 co-headliner Brandon Vera was sponsored by HostGator. Vera is a reputable Muay Thai fighter who is also known for his Jiu-Jitsu skills.

Besides donating a generous USD100,000 amount to the fund, HostGator also participated in the Hosting for Haiti alliance, a joint-effort by major web hosting companies to help raise more funding and awareness to the tragedy.
2010 in a Nutshell
The year 2010 was a golden year for HostGator. The company doubled its customer base while expanding its own offices at the same time. HostGator has also successfully integrated itself into the mainstream media in the form of sports and games but it also took time out to help support important causes in the form of generous donations and great marketing work for charity.
2011 also seems to be an exciting new year for HostGator and its users, especially with the launching of the new HostGator Account Manager and a partnership with Attracta to create powerful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tools.
