When we first heard about GreenGeeks, we have wanted to learn more about them. While they do offer similar features as other web hosting providers, there’s one thing that really sets them apart. And that’s their claim to be “300% Wind Powered Green Hosting” and “Carbon Neutral Friendly“.

Therefore, we are very proud to be able to interview GreenGeeks’ CEO himself, Mr. Trey Gardner and bring to you the interview. But before that, let’s learn a little about this award-winning hosting provider first.

GreenGeeks’ Background & Features

GreenGeeks was established in 2006 and has since been a leader in green hosting, with over 100,000 websites hosted with them. They are currently offering shared web hosting, reseller and VPS hosting with dedicated servers hosting in the near future. What are some of GreenGeeks special hosting features?

  • Unlimited disk space & bandwidth
  • 24/7/365 North American support via live chat and email. Phone support is available 7 days a week
  • Unlimited domains within 1 account
  • Automatic nightly backups
  • Unlimited email accounts
  • Unlimited MySQL databases
  • Free website builders and templates
  • Spam Assassin Protection
  • Fantastico & Softaculous Script Installer

Find out their complete list of features on their official website.

But the features that really set GreenGeeks apart is their energy efficient infrastructure as well as them being 300% wind powered green web hosting.

Green Web Hosting

In the extremely competitive web hosting industry, not many companies are willing to invest back into the environment. There are only a handful of hosting providers who can claim to be 100% wind powered.

Green hosting

Realizing that the web hosting industry is estimated to be one of the largest (if not the largest, surpassing the aviation industry) environmental polluter by 2020, GreenGeeks strives to reduce this by providing green energy hosting and being carbon negative (offsetting more carbon footprint than was used). Not only is GreenGeeks 300% wind powered, they have also modify their servers to run more efficiently thus using less cooling fans power.

Interview With Trey Gardner

Trey Gardner is the CEO and brain behind GreenGeeks. He is one of the earliest people involved in the hosting industry and is one of the most respected too. Having been in the web hosting industry for over a decade, Trey has literally worked in almost every aspect of this business. From quality check and control panel development to marketing and business development to sales, Trey has “been there and done that”.

So it is no surprise that when he decided to start his own web hosting company, he brought along valuable experiences and knowledge to make GreenGeeks a truly unique web hosting company indeed.

Read more about this as well as his thoughts and visions for GreenGeeks below.

Hello Trey, we thank you for being with us today and we are glad to have you as our guest at 100Webhosting.com.

Thank you very much, I am happy to be here.

To get things started, can you please introduce yourself and explain what is your role at GreenGeeks? What is your typical day like at work?

My name is Trey Gardner, I have been in web hosting since 1999. I have held many positions at other hosting companies including Director of Marketing, Reseller program director, Director of quality assurance and General manager.

I am currently the CEO of GreenGeeks which I started in 2007. I wear many hats at work and as ours is a business that serves people 24x7x365, I work everyday. My work includes pretty much every part of the business from quality assurance, marketing, making sure people get paid, examining new enhancements to our services, you name it and my finger print is on or near it.

I understand that you have more than 10 years of experience in the web hosting industry. Can you share with us about your experiences in this industry?

Yes, I helped grow several companies through marketing efforts. I was in the lead role for developing a reseller program, which I started back in 2000. I performed quality checks on different parts of several companies and I grew from the ground up my business and one hosting company prior to GreenGeeks.

Can you please give us a brief introduction to GreenGeeks and its history?

I started GreenGeeks because over the years in web hosting I had seen where companies were successful and where they failed.

I wanted to take my knowledge and create a better web hosting company. At the same time I saw that our industry is a major polluter due to all of the energy consumption and so I set out to become the most eco-friendly web hosting company on the internet, which we are.

What makes GreenGeeks different from the other web hosting companies?

Our standards are far higher than most of the other companies you could choose out there. Out of all of the companies I have worked for or have run, we have the lowest attrition rate of any web hosting company I have been involved with and that is due to the fact that we invest in only the best hardware and software systems and we have an incredible support staff. In addition to this our Green mission to turn the web hosting marketplace eco-friendly and we’re starting to see those goals come to fruition with other companies involvement in becoming green.

With the current hosting industry being so competitive, a lot of them rely on outsourced support staff to maintain their low prices. What’s your take on this?

Great, I love it when other companies outsource their staff because it is bad for their consumers and good for us when those consumers come here & see that we manage our own staff. We make the customers happier than those companies who outsource and therefore retain their business longer. I am sorry for the consumer who has to endure the bad outsourced support until they come to GreenGeeks.

Your website says your company is “300% Wind Powered Green Hosting”, what does that mean? Does this offer any benefits to the customers?

We work with non profit companies who work with the wind farms so for every unit of energy we pull from the grid we put back into the grid 3 times that amount of energy having been produced by wind. The customers get to know that their web sites are actually helping to make the internet a more eco-friendly place.

Some of the things that matter most when it comes to web hosting is reliability and performance. How do you ensure the best uptime and speed to your customers?

We invest in the best hardware, software and we have a rocking support team and a top notch quality assurance director monitoring everything. We have a great staff and great protocols for helping our clients.

Do you own your own data centers? If so, how many do you have and where are they located?

We do not own our own datacenters, we work with SingleHop (I have known the owners of that company for over 10 years) out of Chicago and Phoenix and we work with a colocation facility in Toronto. We lease the hardware which makes it far easier to upgrade when the newest and best servers become available.

Why should customers opt for GreenGeeks? What are the benefits of hosting with GreenGeeks over the other hosting companies?

Our uptime and our support personnel are just better than anything that consumers will find anywhere else. I love when we get customers who have hosted elsewhere because they tell us how much better we are and how much happier they are.

We understand that you offer 24/7 support. Can you brief us more about your customer support department? What kind of support can we expect from the company?

We have 24x7x365 chat and email support and we have phone support available Monday to Friday: 9am EST to Midnight EST
Saturday and Sunday: 9am EST to 8pm EST. We also have extensive FAQ and video tutorial sections available for our customers.

What is one thing most people do not know about GreenGeeks?

That is tough to say, I am pretty open about myself and my past experiences and why I built this company. I think that anyone who wanted to know all about GreenGeeks could just go through the site and would be able to know all about us.

Your web hosting company specializes in shared web hosting, and is also offering reseller hosting and VPS. I don’t see dedicated servers. Any plans to expand your business to dedicated servers in the near future?

We are working with SingleHop to start to offer dedicated services in the near future.

How should we sign up with GreenGeeks? Any chance you can provide us with a great offer today? A great irresistible coupon code for instance? :)

We always have great prices but we have an offer “100WH” which is still valid for $30 off any of our annual packages.

Well, thank you for your precious time Trey. Anything else you would like to add to this interview?
