cPanel is a very widely used hosting control panel. Today, we will look at how you can easily change preferences in cPanel to suit your taste. For this tutorial, we will use one of our account hosted on HostGator as example. Your cPanel interface should be very much the same with our screenshots.
Login to your cPanel control panel. You should see the Preferences section.
This section contains a few functions, namely Getting Started Wizard, Video Tutorials, Change Password, Update Contact Info, Change Style, Change Language and Shortcuts. These are pretty self explanatory, and you will run across them within the Getting Started Wizard.
Tips: Do you know that you can click on the title bar to drag the section to rearrange its position? Also, you can double-click on it to expand/collapse the section.
Getting Started Wizard
The Getting Started Wizard is a wizard designed to let you quickly setup your web hosting account, step by step. All the steps can actually be accessible through the individual icons in the “Preferences” section. The wizard starts by giving you a brief introduction to web hosting.
After that, the wizard allows you to setup a few important settings of your web hosting account. It offers you to setup the Web Disk Accounts. The Web Disk allows you to easily drag and drop files to your hosting account. Once your Web Disk is configured on your local computer, you can drag and drop files to it, edit the files, or view the file, just like they are part of your local computer!
The next step in the wizard, it offers us a chance to setup New Email Accounts.
Just enter all the particulars necessary to create your new email account. All the fields are self-explanatory.
Next, you should then setup the default email address. This email address will “catch” any mail that is sent to an invalid email address for your domain. All email that is sent to an address that does not exist will go to the default email address. To send all default emails to the main mail account, you just need to type the user name of your cPanel account in the email address input field.
After this step, you are given a shortcut to Access cPanel Webmail which you can drag and drop to your desktop or your bookmarks toolbar. This will allow you have access to your webmail more easily.
The next step is Contact Information & Preferences. You can also get to this page through the “Update Contact Info” link outside in the “Preferences” section.
Enter the relevant information to make sure you are updated where necessary. All the fields are self-explanatory.
Once that is out of the way, you will now be able to change the cPanel style.
This feature allows the overall look and feel of cPanel to be changed to fit your personal taste. HostGator provides up to 15 pre-installed styles to choose from. Your web host may have a different number of styles pre-installed.
Click on the thumbnails to preview how each style will look like. Then, just click on “Apply” to use the style. Try out the styles and pick one which you like best.
There you are. You can change the look and feel of cPanel through the pre-installed styles. You can also change the password, the default email, the language and a few other preferences through the applets in the “Preferences” section. That concludes our quick tutorial for this time. We will look at more cPanel tutorials in the near future.
