InMotion Hosting Softaculous

In September 2012, InMotion Hosting announced that they were replacing their then current script installer Fantastico with Softaculous. This partnership announcement was met with enthusiasm from their customers. There were some who were not so keen in the new script installer mainly because they were comfortable with the current one and do not want to learn a new tool. I’m sure they will change their mind soon. I’ll show you why.

Softaculous

Fantastico vs Softaculous

Web hosting services rely on user interface tools (for example the cPanel control panel) to create a user-friendly platform for their clients to install and manage various aspects of the hosting account. But there’s a limit to what can be carried out through this user interface.

Therefore, script installers like Fantastico and Softaculous were introduced for application installations. These installers simplify the software installation procedures, not just for beginners but experienced webmasters find them extremely useful too!

While Fantastico was the first open-source cPanel auto-installer, they have over the years been behind in updates and upgrades. Hence, InMotion Hosting’s decision to partner with Softaculous. Take a look at some of their comparison below:

Fantastico vs Softaculous

Softaculous is scripts installer, providing one-click installation for many popular applications. They were established in 2009 and have quickly risen to become a popular choice among web hosting providers.

What’s awesome about Softaculous is that it offers users a simplified way to install, upgrade and manage their applications. For those users with minimum technical knowledge, this is really useful. For experienced webmasters, this auto installer saves time and effort.

In just seconds, you are able to have access to any of the 290 scripts (and counting) ranging from blogs (e.g. WordPress), Content Management Systems (e.g. Joomla), Social Networking, Ad Management, Mails (e.g. SquirrelMail), E-Commerce (e.g. Magento) and many more.

Uninstalling applications

Likewise, uninstalling an application is also very simple.

Step 1: Login to your cPanel.

Step 2: Click the Softaculous button under “Software / Services”.

Step 3: Click on the “Application Installs” icon at the top menu.

Step 4: Locate the application you wish to uninstall and click the remove icon “X”.

Step 5: This step will remove the application’s directory, database and database user. Uncheck the relevant box that you DO NOT want removed but I would suggest that you remove all. You can always re-install later if you want. Click “Remove Installation”.

Managing applications via Softaculous

Once you have installed the applications, Softaculous continues to offer assistance in managing them, from creating backups to restoring backups to upgrading to importing applications. All in very simple steps.

Upgrading Softaculous

You will be notified whenever there is an upgrade available for your applications. You will find the notification under the “cPanel Notices” at the left menu on your cPanel. Click on the provided link and you will be redirected to the scripts installation page. Click on the upgrade icon beside the application that you wish to update.

Importing applications into Softaculous

As mentioned earlier, you can even import applications that were installed using other installers into Softaculous. This means you can easily move the applications installed earlier via Fantastico into Softaculous. Very convenient indeed. Below are the step by step guide.

Step 1: Login to your cPanel.

Step 2: Click the Softaculous button under “Software / Services”.

Step 3: Locate the “Sync with Installers” icon.

Step 4: A list of all applications that can be imported into Softaculous will appear.

Step 5: Check all the applications that you want to import and click “Sync / Import” button.
